Changes in Citrix Certification program

Together with announcement of XenDesktop 7 Citrix made changes in their certification program. To reflect the Citrix product portfolio the following certification paths are available:

  • Apps and Desktops (AD) – certifications focus on the design, deployment, and management of XenDesktop 7 solutions.
  • Networking – certifications validate the knowledge and skills needed to leverage the full capabilities of Citrix NetScaler, including implementation for app and desktop delivery, networking performance and optimization.
  • Mobility – certification validates the knowledge and skills needed to design, deploy and manage mobile solutions.
  • Cloud – certifications validate the knowledge and skills needed to leverage the full capabilities of Citrix cloud solutions (still not available)

In May 2014 Citrix changed the certification path and names for Apps and Desktops and renamed it  to Virtualization . The below picture presents the available now paths from Virtualization area. Still the Virtualization certifications focus on the design, deployment, and management of XenDesktop 7 solutions. I was not able to find information if new XenApp/XenDesktop 7.5 features are included in the exam scope or not.

If you are already a holder of one of the legacy Citrix certification: CCA/CCAA, CCEE, CCIA then Citrix recommends the following upgrade paths:

Updating to Virtualization Certifications

  • CCA and CCAA certificants can achieve the Citrix Certified Associate – Virtualization (CCA-V) by passing the Associate-level exam, 1Y0-200.
  • CCEE for Virtualization certificants can achieve the Citrix Certified Professional – Virtualization (CCP-V) by passing the Professional-level exam, 1Y0-300.
  • CCIA for Virtualization certificants can achieve the Citrix Certified Expert – Virtualization (CCE-V) by passing the Expert-level exam, 1Y0-400.

As you can see introduced changes makes the whole certification program a bit clearer and I really hope that Citrix will stick to this naming for some time. It will for sure increase the familiarity and credibility of Citrix certs.

My next plan is to achieve CCA-V and I will prepare the study guide that I will share with you. Stay tuned and wait for the next post regarding Citrix stuff.

  1. VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 (Desktop and Mobility Deployment) – The industry-recognized VCAP6-DTM Deploy certification validates that you know how to deploy and optimize VMware Horizon 6 (with View) environments. It demonstrates that you have the knowledge and expertise vital to leverage best practices to provide a scalable and dependable Business Mobility platform for your organization. Some of the subject areas involve: Configuring and managing Horizon View components, configuring cloud pod archituecture, configuring Group Policy settings related to Horizon View, Configuring and optimizing desktop images for Horizon View & Mirage, Configuring and managing App Volumes AppStacks, Configuring desktop pools, Configuring and deploying ThinApp packaged applications, Configuring VMWare Identity Manager, etc.Sebastian’s take on the VCAP6 exam: “In my personal opinion VCAP6 examination is way better experience when compared with VCAP5, the new examination looks exactly like VMware HOL. The interface is straightforward, questions are organized on the right side of the screen, and could be concealed aside or even restored when desired. My advise on the questions window: if you choose to make it floating, you should know how to restore it back. I ended up shifting it around simply because I forget about how to restore it back. The 2 arrows that resembled control buttons on top were created to dock the window to right or left. Fonts can be resized, which in my opinion was a lot better than scrolling down and up the question. The reaction speed of the whole user interface was considerably faster in comparison with VCAP5.5, and there wasn’t any lagging period experienced when changing from window to window. One thing to bear in mind: BACKSPACE key is not working! I think this is beneficial because you don’t reload your examination window by accident, then again, it could be bothersome occasionally whenever you type some thing mistakenly and you need to select and press Del to remove. The Desktop and shortcuts were organized quite nicely, and all essential applications like web browser or Mirage console could be launched. You will find there’s excellent interface for Remote Desktop Manager where you can find all required RDP connection to servers or desktops without the need to type username and password. The web browser had all the links in the Favorite Bar. Right at that moment I am writing this, there is no extra 30 minute extension for Non-Native English speaker at No-Native English country, which is a bummer. You’ll find thirty-nine question to respond to within the 3 hours time period, and this can be actually quite hard for non-native English speakers just like me. Several questions take time to complete, making it far better to skip the questions that you cannot respond to, and finish those you are able to. At the end of the thirty-nine questions, you can come back to the uncompleted questions in case you still have time. Don’t squander too much time on one single question! The examination blue print is found on my site at It is well-organized and following it for the examination preparation will be helpful to a lot. Of course, the most beneficial is if you can have a lot of practical experience! I’m truly very pleased with the examination experience, though I passed this time by small margin, but I understand what I missed for the examination, learn from the errors and practice harder to familiarize myself with the environment. This certificates is sure to open up your career prospects!”
